Why Our International Space Treaty Is So Important
For 47 years,
there has been International
Cooperation regarding
securing the use of outer space for exploration and peaceful
purposes. In 1967, the space treaty was formed, which was
an international effort that laid down the clear context
and highest intent regarding what exploration in outer
space was to be about. However, there was one glitch. There
was a slight opening in the language of the treaty which
is unresolved, and is being exploited by people in different
parts of the world. There is growing interest in commercializing
space. Outer space appears to be on the market. Celestial
bodies are being sold as property in outer space. People
and organizations are and have been paying money for lunar
deeds. Monies are being transacted in this area of business.
Ownership laws on earth are being projected into Space.
Something is happening and we need to pay attention to
it.
The imagination
is exciting and the prospect of the future beyond this
planet is compelling, however, there is danger lurking
when the polarization and misuse of power on earth begins
to have its way in outer space. I was deeply shocked and
saddened when it became clear to me many years ago that
earth is on the market; but, when I found out a few weeks
ago that Outer Space may be on the market, I was truly
horrified. Is this legal and binding?
We need to understand
what was the promise of this International treaty and its
historical context and what are the current details and
challenges surrounding it?
There is a wonderful
steward who is a highly dedicated woman who is considered
the grand matriarch of Space Law, who may be one of the
most important people to speak on this matter that is alive
today. It may well be that Peace on earth and in Space
will be sealed by prompt International Cooperation for
and compliance with the Space Treaties and Laws that have
been established.
